Tatting lace (or tatted lace) is a traditional technique of creating intricate lace by hand. It is said to have first appeared in Europe in the early 1800's and has been endeared by nobles and royalty throughout history due to its extreme difficulty. Even in the 21st century with the introduction of machine-made lace, the loops and knots which define a true tatted lace piece still must be done by the swift hands of trained artisans.
